Resin is one of the important materials for 3D printing and is mainly used in photocuring technology.
Common types of resins used in 3D printing
1. Acrylate Resin
This is the most common and main type of resin, and almost all SLA/DLP resins are based on it.
Main components:
- Monomers: acrylates, methacrylates (such as HEMA, TMPTA, HDDA).
- Oligomers: epoxy acrylates, polyurethane acrylates, polyester acrylates.
- Photoinitiators: TPO, BAPO, irgacure 1173, etc.
Features:
- fast curing speed
- high molding precision
- adjustable transparency, color and flexibility
- low cost
Disadvantages:
- has a slight odor
- average toughness after curing
Applications: Prototyping, models, dental models, and general consumer 3D printing.

2. Epoxy Acrylate Resin
This is a higher-performance modified resin commonly used in industrial printing.
Advantages:
- lower shrinkage
- excellent adhesion
- high mechanical strength
- excellent chemical resistance
Applications: Industrial prototypes, molds, electronic components, and functional parts.
3. Polyurethane Acrylate Resin
This is a highly tough photosensitive resin system.
Advantages:
- combines flexibility and strength
- impact resistance
- adjustable hardness
Applications: Elastic parts, flexible structures, insoles, and biomimetic compoents.
4. Epoxy-based Photopolymer
By introducing acrylic functional goups into epoxy resin, it becomes photocurable.
Advantages:
- high heat resistance (Tg can reach over120℃)
- high strength, low shrinkage
- excellent stability
Applications: Industrial molds, automotive parts, high-precision engineering components.

Basic Composition of 3D Printing Resin
| Ingredient | Function |
| Photosensitive monomer | Provides fluidity and reactivity |
| Oligomer | Determines mechanical properties and toughness |
| Photoinitiator | Absorbs UV light to initiate polymerization |
| Additives (pigment, stabilizer, filler) | Improve color, weather resistance, and transparency |
